“The patient had been triaged and later reassessed by emergency department staff — and was waiting for further care in an emergency department space, the emergency department was fully staffed at the time.” - AHS Statement

Alberta Health Services says a patient has died in hospital in Red Deer while awaiting care in the emergency ward early Sunday morning.

There were no further details on the nature of the illness or circumstances of the death at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, however AHS did confirm that the medical examiner has been called in and a review is underway.

“We acknowledge that wait times at (the hospital) were long at certain times over the weekend due to a surge in demand, and an increase in very sick patients,” said AHS spokesman Kerry Williamson. “We do not know if this incident was the result of wait times in the Red Deer emergency department.

Williamson said the patient had been triaged and was later reassessed by emergency department staff, and was waiting for further care.

AHS did not provide a gender or age of the patient, or where the patient had died.

Health Minister Jason Copping was asked about the death during a COVID-19 briefing Tuesday afternoon, but he said he didn't have many details.

"I'm taking this matter very seriously, I've asked AHS for a report and they're looking into it"
